Velvet Buzzsaw is a wild ride that mixes horror with a sharp critique of the modern art scene. It takes place in Los Angeles where money flows and artistic integrity often takes a back seat to massive paychecks. The story kicks off when a series of hauntingly beautiful paintings are discovered in the apartment of a deceased artist. Everyone wants a piece of this newly found treasure but greed quickly turns into a nightmare as the art starts taking revenge on those who try to profit from it.

The cast is absolutely stacked with talent and brings this bizarre world to life. Jake Gyllenhaal plays a snobby art critic named Morf Vandewalt and his performance is as unhinged as the movie itself. Rene Russo shines as a ruthless gallery owner who will do anything to stay on top while Toni Collette brings her usual brilliance to the role of an ambitious museum curator. You will also spot other big names like Zawe Ashton, Natalia Dyer, and John Malkovich who all add their own unique flavor to the chaotic mix.

Visually this movie is a total treat and captures the flashy ridiculousness of high society art culture perfectly. The outfits are outrageous and the galleries look stunning which makes the creeping dread feel even more out of place. It blends laugh out loud satire with some genuinely creepy moments creating a very strange but entertaining atmosphere. The director manages to poke fun at the pretentiousness of the industry while still delivering a solid scary story.

Anyone looking for a thriller that dares to be different will definitely get a kick out of this one. It is absurd and campy but that is exactly what makes it such a fun watch for a late night movie marathon. You do not need to know anything about fine art to appreciate the crazy twists and the supernatural revenge plot. Just grab some popcorn and get ready for a bizarre journey into a world where art literally kills.
