Earlier this year I found out about the upcoming Project Hail Mary movie starring Ryan Gosling. I am not exactly the biggest fan of his acting so his presence did not immediately thrill me, but it did give me some hope that the movie might actually be a solid watch. While waiting around for the release date, I discovered that the whole production is based on a book by Andy Weir. If that name sounds familiar, he is the same brilliant author who wrote The Martian, which of course inspired that massive cinematic hit with Matt Damon. The moment I made that connection, I was completely blown away and I knew I had to dive into the source material.

I ordered the book right away and I practically devoured it in just a few days. I was profoundly impressed by the way the author paid such close attention to all the intricate scientific details. He made genuine efforts to ensure that the physics felt completely real and grounded within a wild sci fi story. He even meticulously accounted for time dilation, directly exploring the fascinating consequences of Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity as a ship travels through the cosmos. Honestly, I managed to wrap my head around some genuinely complicated scientific concepts just because of how beautifully and clearly this book explains them!

Towards the very end, I was reading with my heart in my throat. The protagonist, who spends most of the story as an extremely fearful and reluctant scientist, is forced to make a truly monumental decision. The survival of billions of lives back on Earth hangs in the balance of his choice, with the tragic exception of his own life. It is a breathtaking and emotional climax that will leave you staring into space.
