Hokum is a slow burning folk horror film that pulls you into a lonely, unsettling corner of rural Ireland. It follows a troubled writer who arrives at a remote hotel to fulfill a deeply personal mission, only to discover that the place is surrounded by strange stories, unsettling traditions, and an atmosphere that never lets you relax.
Rather than relying on constant scares, the movie focuses on mood, mystery, and psychological tension. Every hallway, every conversation, and every quiet moment adds another layer to the growing sense that something is deeply wrong. The Irish setting, combined with local folklore, gives the film a unique identity that stands out from more familiar haunted house stories.
Adam Scott delivers a surprisingly serious performance, showing a character weighed down by grief, regret, and emotional distance. The supporting cast helps create a believable world filled with people who seem ordinary at first, but gradually reveal hidden depths. The film keeps raising questions without rushing to answer them, making the mystery even more engaging.
