The Odyssey, a must watch

Christopher Nolan brought his ambitious vision of Homer ancient Greek epic poem to life with his summer 2026 release titled The Odyssey. Shot completely on IMAX 70 mm cameras, the vast spectacle reimagines the ten year journey of Odysseus after the fall of Troy as a deeply psychological study of human endurance, trauma, and guilt. Matt Damon stars as the Ithaca king, delivering a grounded performance as a military commander burdened by the horrors of war and desperate to return home to his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway, and his son Telemachus, played by Tom Holland.

The film abandons conventional computer graphics where possible, leaning instead into practical effects, massive natural landscapes, and tangible set designs to ground its mythical encounters. Legendary encounters like the terrifying Cyclops, the sorceress Circe who transforms sailors into swine, and the haunting sea obstacles are staged with overwhelming sensory intensity. Zendaya appears throughout as the goddess Athena, serving less as a soaring deity and more as a psychological manifestation hovering within the hero conscience, constantly questioning whether his relentless suffering stems from human error or divine fate.

With a sweeping score composed by Ludwig Göransson and breathtaking cinematography by Hoyte van Hoytema, the three hour cinematic journey examines the emotional toll of returning home long after a conflict ends. Beyond the grand battles and mythical beasts, Nolan focuses on the quiet agony of soldiers who struggle to reclaim their prewar lives, turning an ancient legend into a surprisingly intimate study of memory, sacrifice, and survival.
