After watching Iron Lung, I immediately ranked it as the worst movie I have ever seen. That top spot was later challenged by My Ugly Stepsister, which still ended up taking second place. This is the kind of movie you could use as torture, if someone were tied to a chair with their eyelids taped open. It is so unbelievably bad that the English language simply does not have enough words to describe it. If you still feel like giving this “masterpiece” a chance, here are a few things you should know.
It offers a fresh and surprisingly dark take on the classic Cinderella story, shifting the spotlight to the stepsister instead of the princess. Rather than telling a familiar fairy tale, the film explores beauty, jealousy, and social expectations through a much more unsettling lens.
What makes the movie stand out is its willingness to mix psychological drama with body horror. The transformation into the “perfect” woman is shown as something painful and obsessive, turning the pursuit of beauty into the film’s central source of tension. It is uncomfortable at times, but always purposeful.
The visual style is both elegant and disturbing, creating a fairy tale world that feels beautiful on the surface while hiding something much darker underneath. Strong performances help make every character feel more human than their storybook counterparts, with no one fitting neatly into the role of hero or villain.
Instead of simply retelling a well known story, My Ugly Stepsister challenges the audience to look at it from a completely different perspective. It is a bold, thought provoking film that blends horror, satire, and emotion into something that feels original, even if you already know the fairy tale that inspired it.
